O3F - An Optimization Framework to reduce Forest Fire is a project financed by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (PCIF/GRF/0141/2019) that gathers researchers from different universities (Minho, Aveiro and Lisboa in Portugal and São Paulo in Brasil) with the aim of contributing with optimization tools to support decision-making in fire-related problems.
In particular, the O3F team is building optimization models and methods devoted to two main areas:
1. Operational management of firefighting resources;
2. Forest management with fire awareness.
The optimization models are combined/integrated with fire behavior and spread models and are being tested with data from actual landscapes (e.g. fuels and slopes).
A prototype software, pyO3F, is being developed.
Optimization and Wildfire Conference
O3F is organizing a conference on Optimization and Wildfire at Luso, Portugal, 1-4 October 2024.
Confirmed keynote speakers are Dave Martell (University of Toronto), José C. Borges (University of Lisbon), and Yu Wei (Colorado State University).
The conference will take place at the Grande Hotel do Luso on October 1 (get together), 2, 3, and 4, 2024. Luso is a small town in the center of Portugal, near the Bussaco Forest, a managed forest since the XVII century.
